Electronic Arts' latest offering in the mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting genre, EA Sports UFC 2, has certainly packed its gloves with a slew of new features designed to entice both seasoned fans and fresh faces alike. However, despite these notable additions, it appears that developer EA hasn't quite managed to knock out the core issue plaguing this series since its inception: subpar gameplay.

One area where EA Sports UFC 2 does manage to land some solid blows is undoubtedly in its standing game mechanics. The visceral impact and weighty feel of a well-executed uppercut or hook are nothing short than satisfying, making for an exhilarating experience that will leave even the most hardened fighting enthusiasts grinning from ear-to-ear.

Unfortunately, however, these glimmers of greatness quickly dissipate as soon as things hit the mat. The floor and clinch mechanics in EA Sports UFC 2 feel clunky at best – often bordering on downright broken – leading to a series of frustratingly awkward exchanges that will leave even the most patient players throwing their controllers out of sheer exasperation.

Despite these notable missteps, however, it would be unfair to entirely dismiss EA Sports Ultimate Team altogether. This new mode allows you to assemble an impressive stable of up to five fighters using impressively deep customization options – giving fans a wealth of creative freedom when building the ultimate MMA dream team.

Ultimately though, while EA Sports UFC 2 certainly delivers in terms of sheer content and polish across its various modes (including the aforementioned Ultimate Team), it still falls short of realizing true greatness due largely to issues with core gameplay mechanics. Until these fundamental problems are ironed out once and for all, this promising but ultimately underwhelming offering will remain nothing more than a mere footnote in MMA gaming history.
